Why are my headphones not working?

Earphones can be a very tricky piece of technology that come ridden with small issues that impact the quality of sound and the overall listening experience. When they are working properly they can provide an oasis of sound that enhances the music you choose to listen to. When they are not working, it can become a headache trying to figure out what the problem is. Here are some common issues that can cause headphones not to work.

The first is a damaged cable. Whether this is the point at which the headphones attach to your device or anywhere along the cable line, it can be difficult to spot where the actual issue is. Typically you may see loose wires or the outside coating deteriorated. This is a good sign that potentially the cause of the issue is the cable.

Depending on the types of headphones that you are using, if they involve a headphone jack connecting to your device there is always the possibility that something is blocking the connection. Whether it be dirt or a small piece of something, making sure you clean out the headphone jack/charging area might solve your problem. Ensuring that the headphone jack is securely plugged into the device is crucial.

Lastly, if you are using wireless headphones and there is a problem it would be a good idea to check the bluetooth wireless accessories and connection to make sure that your device is synched and well connected to the headphones.

While these are some common issues that have specific causes, sometimes it can be hard to figure out what is actually wrong. Here are some common fixes to general problems that you might have with your headphones. If nothing is working and you can’t solve the problem, these are some steps you can take.

  • Turn the headphones on and off (if wireless/with earbud charging case)
  • Check compatibility with device
    • You can google this to make sure your device is actually compatible with the headphones you have or make sure they are in fact connected to one another
  • Disconnect and reconnect
  • Headphone volume control: play around with the volume and ensure that the headphone volume is not muted or too low to hear
  • Restart your phone or whatever device you are using
  • Check to see if an update is needed to your device or to the headphones

Villagers unite under the guise of quality sound and grow together to make the world a better, stronger, more connected place for generations to come.

As a sound listener, it’s important to consider what about your headphones is not really working for you. If your products don’t ignite something deeper in you and don’t provide you with new ways to learn and connect with others, maybe it is time to think of switching.
